The Talking Mirror is a reader-supported subscription advice column founded in autumn 2020.
the first forty-one issues of the the talking mirror were printed monthly beginning in october 2020 and ending in a letter of resignation in April of 2024. It worked like this: readers signed up for a six-month or year long subscription on my website. in turn, they were provided various means to send me questions for answering in a forthcoming issue. each month, i collected three or four questions to answer, as well as crafting illustrated letterheads and introductions. issues were printed on two pieces of paper, front and back, first with a brother laser printer, and then when the project grew, on my risograph sf 5130. papers were stapled, tri-folded, stuffed in lean envelopes and sent around the world.
i have plans to revive the talking mirror and to make a spiral bound collection of issues 1-40. this project showed me what could be possible when art is as an interactive, community supported project, particularly when that project is both intimate and anonymous, paper-bound and spread miles apart.
