Decluttering is a practice – an oft-overused word – but an apt description for the daily rituals of adulthood. Responsibility never lets up, and it takes grit and discipline to practice self-care. Drinking water, eating right, exercise and good sleep are foundational practices to taking care of the body. But to be human is to interact with the physical world, and making a home is foundational to the life of a grown up. Keeping a tidy, beautiful and thoughtful home-space takes practice, especially within the context of our consumer culture. Sometimes there exists an impulse to desire and acquire more stuff in an attempt to build a better personal world. This impulse is centered in meaning-making, but it often proves lacking. By now, most of us already have most things we need and must practice tending to the world we have rather than trying to purchase what we think we want. By tending, we grow into who we are becoming as opposed to trying to buy who we wish we were. All this to say, de-cluttering is the practice of knowing what you have, why you have it, and arranging your home to reflect how you live out your days.
Inviting someone into your home to witness and even assess how your possessions and objects move and land is often a vulnerable experience. I am sincere when I claim to be non-judgemental and compassionate. objects are morally neutral. why, how and where we keep them has no inherent meaning or value beyond how it affects our daily life. I come to you with a loving eye, willing to see you as perfectly, imperfect, learning as you go, ready for positive change. My Motto is " Better is Better!"
Decluttering with me is a collaborative experience. We will talk about how you live in your home, your habits, your comforts, most-used paths, lifestyle choices, where you rest, where you move, how you learn, what you love about your home, what you hate, what you hope for from our work together. Some folks like to be completely involved in the decluttering process. Others like me to pull out and sort materials for staying or going, allowing me a lot of control over arrangement of a space. Most folks fall somewhere in the middle, joining me side-by-side to clean, sort and organize. Almost always, clients will continue to declutter after our session together, inspired by how much change can happen in just a handful of hours.
